AACASA assists Koala Home
Some projects which are associated with Koala which people may like to assist with are also listed. For many of these projects you may send a donation to AACASA with a letter clearly saying what project you wish your donation to go to and 100% of your donation will be forwarded.
1. Formula
Each State/Territory has a 'formula fund'. This is held in the State/Territory aid stash, and is for members to take formula when they travel to Ethiopia.
2. Pharmaceuticals
Each State/Territory has an OPAL fund, which is to be used by state members to purchase OPAL to take with them.
If you wish to apply, you can download your Wish List of OPAL Aid and email to Kate (email details are on the downloadable file).

3. Van
Van fund to assist in paying for the van Lakew will use to transport Koala children about in.
4. A Regional House for orphaned children
A regional house for orphaned children, which will be set up by Lakew and Misrak in a town out of Addis.
5. Koala Home
Koala Home general fund account (to be used at the discretion of the treasurer when needs arise, i.e. cots, medicines, formula, hospitalisation).
AACASA assists children not related to Koala
Many AACASA members express an interest in assisting African children who will not end up within Australian Homes. This is one of AACASA's aims as an organisation and to assist members in this, a list of places we know of that you may be interested in supporting are below. A number of these places AACASA donated money to last year, the total donations reaching $20 000.
1. The HIV wing in Atetegeb Worku Orphanage.
Occasionally children come to be allocated to Australia from this orphanage but not often. They care for a range of children and want to build an HIV wing so 'their HIV children' can stay with them and be cared for by people familiar to them. Gaylene visited here earlier in the year and I am sure she will be happy to give more information to those who are interested in assisting this project.
2. Assistance to build a school in a leprosy community
Last year AACASA donated some money towards a project to assistance to build a school in a leprosy community in Jimma which will also provide for children living in the surrounding slum area. There were 64 families living in Tulema and a number of orphaned children, but there are probably many more families now as it is always growing. People with leprosy were living in the Jimma cemetery after being ousted from surrounding villages, before being provided with a home in the community. Many are beggars prior to receiving assistance. Given the social segregation and being ostracized, their children are often not welcomed at schools or shy away from going.
3. Contribute to the building of homes
Also last year, AACASA donated to a project that contributes to the building of homes for families in Jimma. These houses are for families who might have leprosy, or a family of orphaned siblings or families in extreme poverty. Each house costs $2000, less without foundation.
4. S'le'nat orphanage.
A small poorly funded orphanage, the children are allocated to an overseas country, but not to Australia. Gaylene visited S'le'net earlier this year and can give more information about this orphanage.
5. Godanaw.
This is a non-government, non-profit, voluntary organization whose focus is to help street children of Addis, particularly around the national theatre, Mexico Square, Meskel Square and Kirkos areas. Godanaw, amongst other things, assists young single homeless mothers to give them alternatives and support which may enable them to keep their babies. Please refer to the proposal below to obtain more information about this wonderful place or contact Gaylene for more information.
6. Hope for Children.
A non-government organization providing assistance to children who have lost their parents to HIV/AIDS, children who are HIV-infected, and caregivers in a very poor part of Addis Ababa.
7. Medical Missionaries of Mary
An organisation identifying children in need on the streets of Addis, the children are often orphans or living in poverty. The organisation meets the short term needs of these children which is generally providing food. Morgan Smith, an AACASA mum, is the contact for this project, the project also operating thru WFA.
8. Daughters of Charity in Addis.
This is an education project for disadvantaged children in Addis. The Daughters of Charity believe that education is a tool for changing the future of disadvantaged children (Kate will give details on this project to anyone who would like to know).
9. Eldoret Orphanage
Eldoret Orphanage (Kenya) - an orphanage caring for over 100 children in Kenya. They are set up as 4 cottage homes, each with 'house parents' so that the children have a family atmosphere to grow up in. They receive no church or government funding.
