How you can help

If you are waiting for an allocation or for your file to be sent or if you have your children but would like to help children in Ethiopia, we welcome your assistance!

Financial donation

Make a financial donation to...

  • the pharmaceutical fund or
  • the AACASA aid fund or
  • a specific project assisting children in Ethiopia

Help with other places in Ethiopia

If you would like information on other places in Ethiopia that need assistance, please contact Sandi who will give you a list. Most of these can be donated to through AACASA and 100% of your donation will be sent to the project you specify by AACASA.

Please contact Sandi for further details on these if you'd like to help in this way.

Sponsor a Child

Sponsor a child through one of the projects mentioned in the past newsletters. A number of AACASA members have been involved in setting up assistance for very disadvantaged children in Ethiopia through established organisations and would be delighted to have your interest and assistance.

How to (and not to) send Aid to Koala House

  • Please DON'T send aid by post or unaccompanied baggage unless you will be there to pick it up at the other end!

  • It can be frustrating to us who are used to an Australian system where someone can post us something and we just turn up, show ID and collect it. However, it is a very different situation for Lakew to collect aid sent to him from Australia and is usually such a costly and/or time consuming exercise that he has requested that people do not send aid this way.

  • So at this stage, aid needs to accompany parents or alternately, be sent as excess baggage and collected BY the parent at the other end.

You can help children in Africa

AACASA members can see the file AACASA Aid overview 2006pub.pdf in the file section of the AACASA e-group for more information on the different aid and sponsorship programs that are helping children around the world.

.

The following are World Families Australia projects through which you can sponsor children or support projects.

.

There are six different project groups, some with more than one project.

1. Addis: Daughters of Charity:

Sponsorship Officer - Kate

This project assists disadvantaged children in slum areas of Addis. Their assistance to disadvantaged children is often through education as they believe this is the best way to give a child an opportunity to change their future of poverty. Gifts or sponsorships of the project can be given, but no sponsorships of individual children are available.

2. Addis: HICTO:

Sponsorship Officers - Rob & Carol (e-mail Sandi for contact details).

This project is of individual child sponsorships of disadvantaged children living in the community in Addis.

3. Addis: Medical Missionaries of Mary

Sponsorship Officer - Morgan

Two projects are available. One project provides individual children with long term support. The other aims to meet the short term needs of children MMM identify as needy. The organization decides who receives funds and for what purpose. It is often food. People can sponsor this project or give one off donations.

4. Jimma: Daughters of Charity

Sponsorship Officer - Sandi

Four projects are being run in Jimma.

- individual child sponsorships

- a housing project

- building and assisting in running costs for a school in a leprosy community

- a surgery fund for children in need of surgery/medical assistance.

People can sponsor or give one off donations to the 3 projects.

5. Bonga Rural: Daughters of Charity

Sponsorship Officer - Emma (email Sandi for contact details)

Individual sponsorship is provided for children and young adults living in the rural areas out from Bonga, who are visited monthly by horseback and on foot. These children, many of them girls, are unable to attend upper primary or secondary school without financial support, as they need to go to Bonga for this.

6. Bonga: Daughters of Charity

Sponsorship Officer - Sandi

This project provides individual sponsorships for children living in and near Bonga who are either orphaned, handicapped or for other reasons in need of assistance.

Donate a goat or lamb to a family

A goat or a lamb helps in many ways - it provides wool for clothes and blankets and fresh milk for children.

The family can also take any offspring of the goat/lamb to sell at the market, which gives them money.

With some of the schemes, there is an agreement that the family will donate the first female offspring to another family.

The following organisations organise donations to purchase a goat or lamb for a family, however, if you specifically want to donate to Ethiopia, you might like to check with the organisation before making your donation...

Donate a Mosquito Net

By donating a Mosquito Net you help parents and families against the threat of Malaria.

World Vision has a program for providing Mosquito Nets, and training for the mother on how to use it.
