WISH LIST;
Usually people carry items that Lakew and Misrak request. Medicines such as Panadol, commonly used antibiotics, baby formula, lice treatment, medicines for babies with reflux etc. travelling parents should liase with Sandi regarding an up to date list of requirements before filling in this section.
Example;
Baby Panadol for ages 1-5 X 4 bottles
Amoxicillin antibiotic for children X 5 bottles
Gloves for the nannies X 10 pairs
Pepti-Junior Formula X 5 cans
Weight;
Most families take up to 10kg of OPAL aid, this of course can be more or less but 10kg seems to be the standard.
Budget;
Traditionally people spend around $200, this includes transport of the box to your home address (if not in SA). $200 may seem a lot but it gets about $1500 (roughly) of medicines and creams that Lakew and Misrak need. $200 in our local pharmacies would not buy too much these days.
Your address;
No P/O boxes please, we need to have the exact address for delivery and for customs clearances. A phone number is important in case the transport company need to contact you.
Please remember that OPAL is a small charity and doesn’t always have the items you list. We rely on the surplus supply from Pharmaceutical companies to stock our shelves and if they don’t give us something then we either have to purchase it at full price or go without. As Kate Drogemuller is an AACASA Mummy and volunteer/ex-employee of OPAL, we are looked after well, we are also only a very small part of the countries they help. Contacting Kate keeps their workload down and she is able to liase between the two organizations, travelling parents and Sandi (the AACASA aid co-ordinator)
OPAL will charge a small administration fee (around 20%) to cover the costs of sorting, packing and documentation required by the airlines and customs. Most of the cost seems to go on transport from SA to other states.
Please remember to contact us ASAP as it takes time to get a package together and OPAL does deal with many other countries and at times, very large aid orders.
